E Co. bites | How to create a climate impact potential narrative for your project proposal?

E Co. bites | Series 4

Welcome to our 4th series of E Co. bites! We share short and easily digestible climate finance explainers, technical lessons, and more about us, our work, and how you can support our mission.

Our Senior analyst, Remus explores how to craft a strong climate impact narrative. Adaptation projects should highlight vulnerabilities, mitigation projects need an emissions baseline, and cross-cutting projects must link both. A clear rationale connects past trends, current challenges, and future risks—justifying action now.

TRANSCRIPT

Crafting a strong climate impact potential narrative, also known as a climate rationale, is crucial for any project proposal on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

For adaptation projects, start with historical climate data. Analyse the past 50 years or more of temperature and rainfall trends, including any changes in extreme weather event frequency and intensity, then, layer in future projections from trusted climate models and secondary literature. Finally, connect these hazards to local vulnerabilities and exposure, showing why specific areas or sectors need intervention NOW.

For mitigation projects, establish your emissions baseline using IPCC guidelines. Show how emissions are trending in your target sector, and connect your project to Nationally Determined Contributions and other national climate commitments.

For cross-cutting projects, do both, and demonstrate these linkages. Maybe your sustainable forestry project both reduces emissions and protects communities from landslides. Or your climate-smart agriculture initiative cuts emissions while building drought resilience.

Remember that your climate rationale should draw clear lines – from past trends, to current challenges, to future risks, to why your project is the right solution TODAY.
