Welcome to your 30th GCF insight report – Bridging the gap: Unlocking more effective collaboration between the GCF and the private sector.
This is our 30th edition of our GCF insight report, entitled ‘Bridging the gap: Unlocking more effective collaboration between the GCF and the private sector’. This report seeks to explore the following questions: What does it take for private sector projects to successfully access GCF funding, and which systemic barriers, if any, are they still facing?
The report provides a clear overview of the actual process private sector actors go through when seeking GCF funding, making this pathway more accessible. Additionally, it highlights key trends in GCF financing aimed at better supporting private sector application processes.
This is E Co’s third report examining the role of the private sector in climate finance, following earlier publications in 2021 and 2022. This latest edition presents updated findings in light of new developments in the GCF.
E Co’s ongoing focus on this area reflects our belief that greater cohesion within the climate finance landscape is essential to fully mobilise private sector participation. By continuing to examine the specific obstacles faced by private actors, this report aims to support stronger alignment among stakeholders and, ultimately, greater mobilisation of private capital for climate projects.
The report draws on E Co’s consultancy experience, particularly our work with the GCF, private sector organisations (such as fund managers, impact funds and other private investors), development finance institutions (DFIs) and multilateral development banks (MDBs). It also incorporates findings from a desk review, including resources from the GCF’s open library and website guidance, as well as anonymised semi-structured interviews and a general survey conducted across a range of industry stakeholders. The report also includes key insights from the GCF Private Investment for Climate Conference which was attended by Principal consultant Zsofia Kovacs and Consultant Sofia Bessadi.
