We’re delighted to share our annual report, E Co. 2025: A Year in Review.
“This year, the theme of our review must be ‘Making it happen’. Not because it was an easy year, but precisely because of the seismic shifts we faced. We are always looking ahead, but it’s also critical to pause and recognise how we collectively navigated one of the most volatile periods in climate finance markets so far.
We faced significant, structural change. The official closure of USAID and clear hostility towards climate issues from the US government created immediate turbulence. This was quickly compounded by subsequent UN budget cuts and shrinking financial envelopes across the development sector. Simultaneously, we saw climate funds continue to develop increasingly complex policies, requiring more effort from us with fewer resources available overall. The wider market is spiraling, with a regrettable shift towards military and defence spending, even as national policies begin to pull investment inward, away from global collaboration. It was, and remains, a challenging operating environment.
Yet, despite this unprecedented external pressure, in our 25th year, E Co. has cut through the noise. We have continued to grow and amplify our impact. I am proud to share that this isn’t luck – it’s a direct result of our core mission, our focused business model, and the unwavering bedrock of our values approach.
Our success was built on two fundamental pillars. First, agility and flexibility, driven by our tireless, purpose-driven team of experts and supporting functions. We adapted swiftly and decisively when budgets shrunk and priorities shifted, ensuring continuity and excellence for our clients. Second, and profoundly, collaboration within the team and with our partners and clients. I spoke at our retreat about the power of empathy – the essential journey from understanding ‘me’ to truly seeing ‘them,’which then allows us to form a powerful ‘us.’ It is this energy of togetherness that enabled us to respond rapidly and effectively. When faced with complexity, our integrated team, bound by mutual respect, delivered innovative, high-quality work that clients could not find elsewhere.
The urgency of the climate crisis means we are running out of time. There is less time for talking and more time is needed for focused, impactful action.
I look at what we achieved this year, in our 25th year – our continued growth in a contracting market and the genuine, on-the ground impact we generated – and I know we have the right foundation. Our ability to convert difficult short-term decisions into long-term gains is proven.
